Engineering Statics


A cylinder is resting between a wall and the floor. The weight of the cylinder is 600 N. It is being pulled by a rope. Determine the magnitude of the force P to be applied to the rope for the motion-impending condition.

A FBD of the cylinder is drawn with all normal and 
frictional forces.  Note that the static coefficient of 
friction is given on the diagram as 0.2 on all surfaces.
The force equation is written in the x direction.
The force equation is written in the y direction.
The moment equation is written about the center of gravity. 
Notice that P is perpendicular to the radius.
The equations are rewritten to make them appropriate for 
entry into the calculator for simultaneous equation solution.
